26 February

I have inherited a new desk

from my landlord who died this past autumn

He was what we affectionately refer to as

"a Character"

and I am absolutely enamored
of sitting at this beautiful desk at the window
and watching the world go by

~

Hyacinths are in at the local market.

I have one sitting on the new desk and it smells like heaven

~

I went to lunch with my daughter Bonnie yesterday

at the Peddler's Daughter

it's sort of an Irish Pub in Haverhill, MA

we listened to Irish music

and ate fish n chips wrapped in newspaper

mine was in the obituaries

which reminded me of my papa

who read the obits daily and called them the Irish funnies.

~

spring comes foggy and wet to our rather tiny island

nothing  but grey skies

My sister got engaged to a great guy!!

25 February

on my desk

there is a frog

a poor relation of Mr. Jeremy Fisher

whose name, so far as I can make out,

is William
He's quite content to sit where he is
and has told me he has no desire whatsoever
to do any hopping about in the garden
Which is rather rather convenient for both of us
as I find a sweet comfort in his company
and he is a fairly sedentary fellow

no amount of kissing will bring it out of him

I don't know if that means he is not a prince

or I am not a princess

but  neither one of us can bear the disappointment of discovery so.....
we are happy to leave things lie

as they are

24 February

We walked the shore along Canoe beach

on one of those teasing days  toward the end of February

the younger ones are happy that spring is here

but we who are older hang back at the edges

we know that the water is far from warm yet

and there is probably snow on the horizon

the desk

I have a new desk.

It belonged to the old gentleman who used to be my landlord.

The woman who inherited the house gave it to me.

I'm sitting at it now looking out the window and listening to

David Bowie.

the good

One of my very favorite lines from any movie ever....

WE ARE GROOT

Which loosely means, for those who have not seen the movie Guardians of the Galaxy

what happens to one of us happens to all of us

~
the random

I think I will be getting a new (to me) desk/table today.

It's beautiful and I can't wait.

I'll post pictures later.

the fun

I will be getting together with my daughter on Thursday and it will be fun.

The good, the random, the fun

21 February

spring starts

 sipping in slowly

like the turn of a phrase

but there is no truth to her

she's like a teasing girl

who leaves you yearning

she is two, three, four, volumes

and when your two feet are planted firmly

in the warmth of an afternoon careless and free

she hides coyly from the rage of old-man winter's sudden attack

and leaves you alone

still freezing in a crisp breeze

nothing is free

winter and spring

sun and shade

cold

This is from last year...other than a week or two it really hasn't been that cold this year.

Which we completely and totally deserve after last year

in which all kinds of lifetime records were broken

and every one pretty much screamed uncle

helper

coffee...ahhhh

sillies

staged

so, I'm not big on staging pictures...not even landscapes and especially not people.

This is the shot I took before all the grandchildren got "staged" for the

thanksgiving photo this year.

wooden cairns on the water

It has been warming up here on this rather tiny island

We feel the slightest hint of spring in the air.

So much so that we walked canoe beach of an evening.

climbed on some rocks

stumbled across a smallish cairn

watched the moon rising up over the the trees
and the ebbing tide

before turning back toward home in the advancing twilight

in which the tallest oak trees live

starfish and snowfall

of a morning after a snowfall

it is enough of an adventure

to gaze out of the window

sunlight glistening off the blue ocean

tea kettle whistles its morning tune

singing of starfish and snow flakes

~

I have been doing some serious job hunting and I have a few things in the works

Yay!!!

~

I am going to visit my sister with my mum for the weekend.

She lives the next state over and my mum just can't do the drive anymore

Honestly, I'd rather stay home but I think I will enjoy myself when I get there.

~

We are a wee bit more than half-way through winter!

~

We have a full tank of oil and will be cozy warm through this next cold spell

so much

so the oil man came early this morning

like at the crack of dawn

knocking at the door

looking for a check

let me write two and post date them

it's going down below zero tonight

that's Fahrenheit folks

and we have a full tank to keep us cozy
-

so there was no cream for the coffee

tiny island store didn't open for another half hour

and when i finally got in line

the owner let me cut...took my crinkled 2 dollars

before the guy with 18 lottery tickets to cash in

maybe he recognized the look of desperation on my face

so much depends upon.....

that first sip of coffee in your warm kitchen

on a sunny morning

so much depends upon...

how you see the world

so much depends upon...

how we treat each other

the poetry lies
in a conversation with the oil man

 pajamas, morning breath, tousled hair
slight scent of diesel in the air

the poetry lies with

a purple box of half and half

morning sunlight shining on the white circle in my coffee cup

so much depends upon

a random connection

where you are

a merry heart doeth good like a medicine

and you are my merry heart

all good gifts come from above

and you are my above

mangata is a moon lit path upon the night time ocean

and you are where it leads
around the glistening blue-green sea toward home

and you are my home

cuppan tae

in the grey morning there is tea

and perhaps a spot of porridge

but mostly, there's the tea

Tuesday Afternoon

Today would have been the 88th birthday of my father. He died in 1981.

When I was a little girl and this song came on the radio my father would declare it "Kara's song"

how do you do

All the politicians singing how do you do

they all want to be my friend

they all want a piece o' me

on and on and on they drone....

you believe that shit??

we might be able to hike through the city

but  we ain't gonna be able to cross the ramp

they got the law on their side....

that's why they make the big bucks

see...I figure 1% of 100 may not seem like much....

but 99% of nothin's still nothin'

I got wolves baying  in close and chopping at my heels....

only one match left to light the darkness

1 February

the good

today is Imbolc

or St. Bridget's Day

this means that it is the Celtic first day of spring.

Today we mark the half way point between spring and winter.

This means nothing here in New England...we are just getting started here.

But it's good to know that it's half-way over somewhere.

The fun

Joe and I have made plans for a movie date this week.
We haven't been out in a while so it should be fun!

The random

It's been a little stormy lately.
